Here is a video portraying the penny’s value.

Historical Background

The Philadelphia mint produced the Indian Head pennies from 1859 to 1909. The Indian head penny was the second small-size penny that replaced the mintage of the Flying eagle penny. Chief engraver J. Barton Longacre initiated the design of the coin.

The initial idea was to create a coin representing an Indian Chief, but the obverse integrated Lady Liberty wearing a headdress.

Initially, the reverse incorporated a laurel wreath, which later got replaced with an oak wreath in 1860. In 1864, the metal composition was altered to increase copper percentage and replace nickel with tin/zinc. Later, during the century’s transition, the Indian Head penny mintage increased to help meet demands.

In 1907, a total of 108,138,618 coins left the mint factory. It was the highest production of the Indian Head penny series. Most of these pennies are damaged, and only some are available in mint state.
