Several years ago I guest posted this tutorial over at the Britex Fabric blog with a pattern and instructions for a child’s cadet style cap! Check out the amazing fabrics they carry! The hat below is made from a beautiful herringbone olive and espresso wool from Britex (these exact fabrics are no longer available).

The instructions and pattern link are available here at Britex. This free pattern comes in child size 5 only. The finished base of the free hat measures 20 7/8″ and fits a head circumference (measured from the middle of the forehead to the widest part of the back of the skull) of 20 1/4″, the average size of a 5 year old.

Thank you for the cute cap. My grandson will be into that in a year or more so I’m thinking he might need a hat like this.

Have you released the extended sizes version, Mary? This cap is wonderful, but I do not know how to enlarge it myself. Thank you!

What an awesome hat! I would also like to inquire about a larger size. I know a 9 year old that would love this! Any information would be appreciated.

I am a newer sewer and I’m having some trouble. I have made the outside of the hat and the lining, but cannot figure out how to sew them together. Does this part have to be by hand? Also, I don’t understand the vent. Was I supposed to notch my upper band when I cut it from the pattern?

Hi Françoise, I don’t have the larger sizes ready to go yet but I’ll keep you updated! Thanks for checking and I’m glad you like the hat!

Hi Susan, I’m sorry I’m just now seeing this comment! I hope you were able to get through the rest of the hat, but if not it sounds like you’ve made it through most of the steps! In the instructions, you’ll be doing the “Final assembly” steps. In those instructions you line up the oval part of the outside with the lining on the inside , pin all around and sew 3 rows of stitching with the sewing machine, so you don’t have to do that part by hand (this part is shown in the first photo under “Final instructions”).

This is a really cute hat and a nice alternative to a baseball cap. I, too, would be interested in receiving
information on making larger sizes when you have these measurements available.
    Thanks for the tutorial —
    Margaret

    Hi Mary,
I definitely would love to try to make this awesome hat for an adult male friend. These style hats are his signature style and I’d love to make him a custom one with his logo embroidered on the side. He’s an amazing musician! I’d greatly appreciate the larger size patterns. Thank you, thank you, thank you in advance!

Hi Michelle, I’m glad you like the pattern and thanks so much for checking in! I don’t have the pattern pieces worked out for the adult sizes yet but I’ll let you know when I do!

Love this pattern, was looking for smaller sizes. Do you have any newborn through 1 yr old size. More specifically newborn? It’s adorable!

I made this today for a thee year old. Most difficult project in 50 years of sewing. The printout was accurate for th 1″ square. I cut everything out. When I began to pin the top band to the top circle…it was really long…about 8″ maybe…as was the bottom band. I ad libbed it and ended up cutting it sorter to fit…same with the lining.

The. Instructions were very confusing. I ended up sewing it my own way…and did not do the extra top stitching as again couldn’t follow the directions with the pics.

I would like to try this again.
For now my grandson will have a gardening cap.

Do you have any pictures of the pattern pieces taped together? As im not quite clear on that? The pieces one says front one says back. I should tape them together to make three long pieces for a, b,c ?tape ( a front) to the( a back )piece etc?

    January 9, 2020 at 11:51 pm

Hi Cathy, I’m sorry I’m just now seeing this! If you look at the photo under “Pattern Assembly,” I updated it so if you click on it, you’ll be able to see a full screen view of the pattern pieces and how they look once they’re all taped together. You are correct that A front is taped to A back, etc.

Do you have adult sizes worked out yet? I know that’s a very popular question and I’m sure you’re very busy…but I would love to receive an email with that pattern information when you do have it completed. Love this hat! Thank you for sharing your work with everyone!

It looks like the pictures have disappeared from the tutorial on the Britex site. Is there anywhere else to find them?
