Hollywood Scarf from “Just For You” + Giveaway!


Hello! In the spirit of Craft Book Month, I’m here today to show off a recent finish from the lovely sewing book from some of my favorite bloggers.

The book is “Just for You: Selfish Sewing Projects from Your Favorite Sew Can She Bloggers: 24 Simply Stylish Projects” by Caroline Fairbanks-Critchfield and Sarah Markos (Stash Books). If you haven’t seen this book, it’s a beautiful collection of sewing projects that you can make for YOU! There are clothing patterns and accessory projects including tops, skirts, bags and more. Each project comes with tutorial-style photos and pattern pieces so you can easily follow along and treat yo’ self!

The project I made is the “Hollywood Scarf” by Venus Perez of the blog Suburbia Soup. (Lots of great contributors to this book!) The original project was designed in pretty Anna Maria Horner rayon, but I chose some coordinating AMH voile prints from my stash. The scarf is assembled with a pretty hood that is attached in a really clever way. This makes the whole project reversible, so you can pick two totally different prints. I love how the outer hood is designed to feature both fabrics.

The lovely model in these photos is Ella, my friend Veronica’s daughter. Let me tell you… this girl is a pro! She frequently poses for Veronica’s blog, sewVery, and I’m a little jealous of the awesome handmade wardrobe she’s collected over the years. 🙂


Let’s say you’re not feeling the hood one day. No problem! Just flip it down and toss the scarf around your shoulders for a more simple look. If the wind picks up, you can pull the hood up to save yourself from that windblown look. Each section of the hood and scarf are topstitched, which gives this project a nice finish that will hold up well as you wash and wear it.

From cutting out the pattern pieces to sewing up the last stitch, I think this project came together in less than 2 hours. I appreciate that the projects in “Just For You” are quick to sew, because it’s easier to carve out that time to sew something for yourself if you know you can finish it in the same day.

I had the pleasure of meeting the “Just For You” authors, Caroline and Sarah, at a quilting event a little over a year ago, and they are just lovely. They are hosting a sew along all this year with the book where everyone wins!

  3. I have raised 6 children and now have 5 grandchildren, oh and by the way I still have an 11 and 15 year old home 😮 , so when I get any time to myself I just sit and listen to the sound of silence.

  6. Weather permitting, I like to relax on the porch & just listen to nature & watch the kitties play. We live in the country, so I have that luxury.

  7. When I have a little free time I really enjoy sewing and doing handwork…cross stitch, English Paper Piecing, crochet and applique. If I’m not feeling very creative at the time I really enjoy reading a good book. I really love the Hollywood Scarf and I would love to make one for my mother. Thank you!

  14. Something I like to do for myself when I get time? SEW!! But when I get just that 1/2 hour or so, I grab my favorite sewing magazine or latest sewing book and jump in a luscious bubble bath to dream of projects not yet begun 🙂 I would love to win this……I’ll have some special bubbles waiting 🙂

  15. How sweet! I love the Hollywood scarf. I have the perfect little girl and her mother in mind for a matching pair of scarfs. My husband is in the process of turning our garage into my sewing room. When it is completed… oh heaven.

  16. I love to make a nice dress for my self but that dosent happen very often with my grand babies around I just love to make great things for them

  17. I have a 2 month old, so when I get 5 minutes to myself 🙂 I like to design and attempt to sew clothes for her with my mother!

  19. Right now i would give almost everything to be abble to take five minutes to be quiet, with myslef. To sit in a confortable chair, listen to some good music through my headphones and relax, look at the grass growing, the birds singing, to see the small things that show us the time is passing because right now the time is passing so quickly but I don’t have time to see it. Let’s hope 2015 will be better!!!!

  20. I love to be able to go and walk the aisles of craft and sewing stores. Oh, the creative juices just get flowing. If only I had time to do it ALL!

  23. I love to curl up with some good Christian music on the radio and a good Love Inspired book in my hands. It’s my favourite time of day.

  24. I like to start the morning with some home-made chai when I have the time. If I’m blessed with more than that, I sew!

  25. When I do get time to myself (which seems less and less these days) I love to ride my horse through the fields on our farm. To watch the rabbits scurrying across the track, to see kangaroos amongst the bushes and the magpies and cockatoos flying here and there. I love to see the lambs and calves playing close to their mothers. The sounds and sights that mother nature offers us bring peace to my heart and soul.

  27. When I get some free time, I will head up to my sewing room to work on some project that’s been put the side, or I’ll pick up a book that I want to read. Often times, that book doesn’t get finished either! I need more free time!

  29. I like to sew or read, or sometimes- just sometimes- sit and relax and enjoy the quiet (I have 2 little so this is VERY rare!). This book looks like fun- love a few of the bags I’ve seen from it.

  48. I love this scarf. I’d make one for my mother, who lives in Europe, she could really use it when going home from the bakery in the middle of the night. I myself love scarfs but can’t really use them in Texas, it’s just waaay too hot here.
    As for me time, I love to catch up on reading or learning to sew when I have a little time away from my twin toddlers. Doesn’t happen often enough.

  58. I love to sew bags just for me. I just finished a huge quilt (Amish With A Twist) and several people have asked, “Who gets this?” I feel awkward when I reply, “Me!”.

  68. I love to spend free time doing hand work — embroidery or quilting. Now that my son has gone off to university, I actually have free time!

  80. I don’t often sew for myself but I do makes key fob for myself now and then. I do make time to see little things for my 2 children who are 8 & 3
    My daughter gets cod easily I’d love to make us each a hooded scarf 🙂
