Step 1: Choose Your Paper
Start by selecting a 15x15cm square piece of paper. This size is ideal for beginners and results in a well-proportioned crane. Make sure the paper is evenly cut to ensure accuracy in your folds.
Step 2: First Diagonal Fold
Begin with the patterned side of the paper facing down. Carefully fold the top corner to meet the bottom corner, aligning the edges perfectly. Press down to create a sharp crease. You should now see a triangular shape with its pointed corners facing you.
Step 3: Second Diagonal Fold
Rotate your triangular shape so that it looks like a square again. Perform another fold from the right corner to the left corner. Again, make sure the edges align well before creasing.
Step 4: Create the Preliminary Diamond Shape
Hold down the layers beneath while lifting only the top layer from one edge. Gently pull it to the right and simultaneously push the bottom corner downwards. Flatten the shape to create your first diamond.
Step 5: Flip the Shape
Carefully turn your origami over, flipping it from the left side to the right side, keeping all layers aligned.
Step 6: Make Another Diamond
Much like step 4, pull up the top right layer. Flatten the left and right corners to form another diamond shape.
Step 7: Preparing for the Bird Base
Fold the top layer’s left and right corners into the center line. Then, fold the top corner downwards to meet them.
Step 8: Unfold and Lift
Unfold the flaps you just made in step 7. Hold down the top corner, lift the bottom layer, pull it upwards, and flatten it while tucking in the sides.
Step 9: Flip the Crane
Turn the entire structure over from right to left, ensuring that the layers don’t misalign during the flip.
Step 10: Fold Towards the Center
Fold the left and right corners of the top layer into the center line.
Step 11: Unfold and Lift Again
Unfold what you did in step 10. Similar to step 8, lift up the top layer and pull it all the way upwards, ensuring you flatten the shape.
Step 12: Finalize the Bird Base
Fold the left and right top layer corners into the center line again.
Step 13: Flip the Crane Once More
Turn the crane from right to left again, keeping the layers aligned.
Step 14: Reinforce the Bird Base
Fold the left and right top layer corners into the center line, identical to step 12.
Step 15: Create One Wing
Hold the right side of your crane while lifting the left top layer. Pull the point upwards, inverting it inside, then flatten.
Step 16: Create the Other Wing
Do the same as step 15, but hold the crane on the left side and lift the right top layer.
Step 17: Shape the Head
Hold down the bottom left corner of your crane and gently push the top left point downwards. Flatten this part to form the crane’s head.
Final Step: Unfold the Wings
Carefully pull the top points of the wings down and outward, making sure not to tear the paper. Your origami crane is now complete!
