How to Make a Simple Picnic Table

Worried about whether you can pull off a DIY picnic table? Let me tell you this elementary plan can help you get started. So here are the instructions to take the first steps. 

What Tools Do You Need to Make a Picnic Table?

To start making your picnic table, you need the following – 

1. 2’x4’ planks – 11
2. Circular saw
3. Jigsaw
4. Sander
5. Speed square 
6. Measuring tape
7. Rasp
8. 2” screws
9. Drill

Build a Picnic Table Step-by-Step: Instructions

1. Calculate the length of the wooden planks using a measuring tape and cut them into pieces in the following dimensions –

• For table board – 2x4x4’ (x7 pieces)
• For seat board – 2x4x4’ (x6 pieces)
• For A-frame legs – 2x4x35” (x2 pieces)
• For A-frame top – 2x4x25.5” (x2 pieces)
• For A-frame bottom – 2x4x4’ (x2 pieces)
• For angled brace – 2x4x27″ (x2 pieces)
• For underside table support – 2x4x23″ (x1 piece)

2. Using a speed square, measure the angles and cut the following angles in the boards mentioned in point 1 – 

• A-frame leg board (x2 pieces) – 60 degrees
• Angled brace boards (x2 pieces) – 55 degrees

3. Once you have all the pieces, file their edges using a rasp. This will make them smooth, clean, and easy to work with. 
4. Next, lay out and align the cut pieces for the A-frames. Then, secure the pieces with 2” screws.
5. You can keep the height of the seat between 16” and 19”. Accordingly, attach the boards on the A-frames.    
6. After that, measure the center of the A-frames’ top boards and screw down the middle board on both sides.   
7. Now that your elementary framework is ready, attach the remaining table boards.
8. Also, apply some nails as spacers to leave room between the table’s top pieces for expansion and contraction. 
9. Now it’s time to attach the sitting boards to the A-frames on the sides. 
10. Once done, clamp on a centerboard for stability, the underside of the table. 
11. Add the 55-degree angled boards on the ends of the table, attaching them to the A-frames to prevent lateral stress. 
12. As a final touch, cut the corner areas at 45 degrees. Then round over the hard-exposed edges with a sander and file down all the rough spots. 
13. Finish off your masterpiece by coating it with varnish or water-based polyurethane, followed by sealer.

What Is the Best Material to Build a Picnic Table?

The best material for building a picnic table is hardwood or pressure-treated lumber. Pressure-treated boards are ideal for outdoor picnic tables that will have heat and rain exposure. They are durable and budget-friendly, and you can also stain them easily. But if budget is no constraint, you can also go for cypress or cedar. 

What Is the Best Finish for a Picnic Table?

After building your picnic table, you can stain it and then coat it with polyurethane to give it protection against the forces of nature. You can also use varnish. Follow it up with a layer of sealer, though you may skip this step if you find that the varnish or polyurethane you’re using already has sealer in it.

How to Maintain Your Wooden Picnic Table

A DIY picnic table – made with your own bare hands! Surely, you’ll want it to last for a long time. And for that, you’ll need to follow these basic maintenance steps – 

1. Sand down the surface and apply paint, polyurethane, and sealer regularly.
2. When you’re done using the table, clean it with a soft cloth and soapy water to remove spilled drinks or food. 
3. Make sure that the table is dry. Wipe it down if required. 
4. Use a stiff brush and a gentle solution (like water and vinegar) to remove stubborn stains, lichen, mildew, etc. 
5. Tip the table upside down so that the feet get a chance to dry. 
6. Place a tablecloth on the table in winter or when not in use. 
7. Store it somewhere dry after use, especially during the rainy season. 
8. Watch out for signs of cracks or gaps – and fill them with wood fillers or caulk to prevent moisture from seeping into the wood. 
9. You can prevent the wood from becoming dry over the years by applying tung, teak, or linseed oil once a year.
